Patina is the natural softening and darkening that occurs when silver meets the world. It is the result of oxidation — but it is also the result of living. Patina will occur when hands are touching metal, air passing over surfaces and jewelry is being worn instead of stored. Patina is proof of relationship with your jewelry collection.
Jewelers can also speed up the patina process by using liquids like "liver of sulfur" that will create a patina. I have always been a big fan of the patina. I will always apply it to all my designs.
Sometimes I feel that patina has a bad reputation. We are taught to believe that shiny equals value. That new is better. But handmade silver jewelry tells a different story. Patina does not take something away — it adds dimension.
Patina reveals what polishing alone cannot. It highlights texture, it deepens shadows and
it honors tool marks which is the subtle beauty of handmade. It allows the surface to speak in layers instead of reflections.
In many of my designs, I work with patina intentionally — allowing darkened areas to settle into crevices while high points catch light and shine. Applying the patina to the various textures and layers of my designs is the best way to create dimension and contrast for me.
There is no correct answer. Some people love the glow of freshly polished silver. Others prefer the softened depth that comes with time or applied patina. Neither choice is wrong.
I feel that patina reminds us that beauty does not stand still. It shifts, it deepens, and it earns its softness.
Silver, like all meaningful things, becomes more itself with time.
