What is Fordite?

By Laura Jane Bouton
Sterling silver rings and pendants with fordite cabochons set in a bezel

What is fordite cabochons made of?  It is actually the excess paint spray from automotive factory paint lines in the mid 20th century. The accumulation of the paint would get so thick it would  obstruct the machinery and have to be chiseled away.

Between the 40s and 70s , workers and amature lapidary artist would collect the chunks of paint, cut and polish them into craft projects. It wasn't until the 80's - 90's that the fordite cabochons started being used in jewelry.

Today, metalsmiths are always on the hunt for the fordite, because it is no longer produce since today cars are painted differently. Some lapidary artist call it  Detroit Agate, or motor city agate. It has such wonderful layers of color.

When creating pendants, rings or bracelets with fordite its like wearing a piece of mid century automotive history.
