Twisting Wire for Jewelry Making
I’ve been teaching jewelry making for about five years now, and one thing that never gets old is watching my students' excitement when they create their first ring or pendant. The joy and sense of accomplishment are always contagious — it’s truly empowering to see their pride in what they’ve made.
One technique that students always fall in love with is creating twisted or textured wire. While you can certainly purchase pre-made decorative wire stock, I believe it’s so much more rewarding (and fun!) to create your own.
I thought I’d share a few quick tips for making your own decorative wire, along with a mini tool list and a short video showing my favorite techniques for twisting wire.
Hand drill
Vice
Torch (for annealing)
Rolling mill ( optional )
Square wire naturally twists into a beautiful, screw-like texture.
Round wire needs to be forged (flattened slightly) before twisting to create a more defined pattern.
Two round wires twisted together will create a lovely rope-like design.
Half-round wire twists into a coil-like shape.
Triangular wire will also produce a coiled effect when twisted.
