Do you wear thumb rings?
I never thought much about them until I started making jewelry. Then somewhere along the way I slipped one on and thought — oh. Oh, I get it now. I’ve been wearing them ever since.
But here’s what I didn’t know when I started: thumb rings have a surprisingly long and interesting history.
They started as tools.
The earliest known thumb rings were discovered in China during the Shang Dynasty, around 1020 B.C. Archers wore them to protect their thumb when drawing a bowstring — purely functional, nothing decorative about it.
Over time, that changed. The thumb ring migrated from the battlefield into the realm of rank and status. In ancient Greece and Rome, high-ranking officials wore bold rings of iron, gold, and silver — and they didn’t stop at one. Stacking multiple rings on the thumb was a deliberate display of wealth and power. The more rings, the louder the message.
Today it’s a different kind of statement.
No one’s signaling military rank anymore. Wearing a thumb ring now is really just about how something feels on your hand — the weight of it, the way it catches the light, the way it makes you feel a little more like yourself.
The two rings in the photo are actually the first thumb rings I ever made. Sterling silver, hammered, with a copper rivet detail. I still wear them. Some things just work.
Most of my stacking rings wear just as well on the thumb as anywhere else — that’s actually how I test them before they leave the bench. If it feels right on my thumb, it goes in the shop. If you’ve been wanting to try one, start there. You might have the same “oh, I get it now” moment I did.
